Protecting the Ecological Environment in Construction Areas with an AloT System

Overview

Environmental disruption and pollution are often unavoidable during construction activities. To proactively detect and address the impacts on the environment, LSCM has developed an AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) system that monitors ecological changes in real time. The system continuously tracks critical environmental indicators, including air and water quality, wildlife activities (such as birds and small animals), and changes in water color. By identifying anomalies early, it enables timely alerts and swift remedial actions by relevant stakeholders.

Problem addressed

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has deployed an integrated 3D visualisation system in the Lok Ma Chau Loop as a trial site for this project. This system assists the EPD in preparing the Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIA). This report assesses the environmental and social impacts to recommend mitigation strategies, and establish comprehensive management and monitoring protocols to minimise potential adverse impact on the environment throughout the project development cycle.

Innovation
  • A Real-Time Monitoring Data Platform to provide API integration for overlaying environmental data on a 3D Map interface.
  • IoT sensors for water, air, and noise monitoring, designed for reliable and long-term environmental analysis. Smart IoT devices that turn the analog utility meter’s data into Digital Data.
  • Video Analytics modules for multi-variable detection, including AI-powered analysis of water colour monitoring at river inlet pipes and construction waste identification and tracking. Unsupervised auxiliary algorithms for network-invariant fake image detection.
Key impact
  • The system enables efficient and effective environmental monitoring.
  • Enhance the capacity to assess both short-and long-term impacts on the environment, through comprehensive tracking of current and historical data.
  • With the availability of real-time data, the EPD can make timely decisions and take immediate action, enabling more effective handling of public complaints.
  • Minimise adverse environmental impact by the real-time monitoring of environmental data.

Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre (LSCM)

Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre (LSCM) was founded in 2006, with funding from the Innovation and Technology Fund of The Government of the Hong Kong SAR, and is co-hosted by the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. It aims to strengthen the local logistics sector and related industries by providing a one-stop resource for applied research and technology transfer, and to reinforce cooperation between the industry and research institutes to bring about meaningful and significant impact on the industry and the community.

LSCM serves the industry by initiating research projects, contract research, as well as providing business matching opportunities, technology transfer and intellectual property commercialisation. LSCM initiates technology and knowledge transfer to the marketplace to promote industrial digitalisation, facilitate technology advancement and strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a leading logistics and commercial hub.
