Overview

This project deploys artificial intelligence (AI) and video analytics technologies for wildfire detection in the country parks of Hong Kong. This unique fusion of the methodologies has been in deployment in one of fire lookout facilities in Hong Kong.

Problem addressed

Wildfires in Hong Kong are mostly caused by human activities. Although the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has adopted a detection system to provide early alerts, the existing system sometimes generates false alarms and reports the location of fires wrongly, which are caused by other heat sources and sunlight reflection.

Innovation
  • Using video analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to identify different heat sources and improve the accuracy of location positioning.
  • The inaccuracy of location information can be effectively reduced by constantly monitoring the relative position of the camera on the base and using landmarks identified by the artificial intelligence (AI) detector.
Key impact
  • By reducing false alarms, such as those caused by sunlight reflection and engine heat, manpower can be saved in verifying the validity of alarms.
  • These technologies improved the accuracy of the existing monitoring system.

Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre (LSCM)

Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre (LSCM) was founded in 2006, with funding from the Innovation and Technology Fund of The Government of the Hong Kong SAR, and is co-hosted by the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. It aims to strengthen the local logistics sector and related industries by providing a one-stop resource for applied research and technology transfer, and to reinforce cooperation between the industry and research institutes to bring about meaningful and significant impact on the industry and the community. 

LSCM serves the industry by initiating research projects, contract research, as well as providing business matching opportunities, technology transfer and intellectual property commercialisation. LSCM initiates technology and knowledge transfer to the marketplace to promote industrial digitalisation, facilitate technology advancement and strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a leading logistics and commercial hub.
