
Lingnan University, a venerable institution in Hong Kong's academic landscape, has a rich heritage that dates back to its founding in Guangzhou in 1888. Known in its earlier years as Lingnan Xuexiao and subsequently as Lingnan University, the institution flourished in the field of higher education until 1952. It was reborn in Hong Kong in 1967 and has since aspired to evolve into a distinguished research-focused liberal arts university for the digital age. Lingnan is committed to excellence in teaching, learning, research, and fostering community ties, aiming for international acclaim.
A recent recognition in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2023, Lingnan has consistently ranked among the top three for "Quality Education" in the world for four consecutive years with the most recent rank in top two globally. Over the past year, we have made significant strides in advancing knowledge and addressing real-world challenges.
14% of our tenured or tenure track faculty members were recognized on Stanford University’s 2024 list of the World’s Top 2% Scientists, a testament to the global impact and quality of our outstanding faculty. Lingnan scholars have achieved unprecedented global recognition, including election as a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (Prof Joe Qin), a Fellowship in the U.S. National Academy of Inventors (Prof Sam Kwong), and Fellowships in the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (Prof Sam Kwong and myself). Prof Xin Yao, Vice-President (Research and Innovation) and Tong Tin Sun Chair Professor of Machine Learning, and Prof Sam Kwong have also been awarded recognition as the world’s most cited researchers by Clarivate. Prof Paulina Wong Pui-yun, Head and Associate Professor (Presidential Early Career Scholar) of the Science Unit, was elected as one of seven new members of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES)'s Young Member Section 2024.
