Rapid Biosensing at the Level Down to a Few Molecules

Overview

Our next-generation smart biosensor represents a breakthrough in rapid and precise detection of protein and nucleic acid molecules. The platform has three major technical advantages: high-frequency acquisition, multi-dimensional analysis, and high-throughput processing, which can fully cover medical scenarios such as disease prevention screening and follow-up health monitoring.

Problem addressed

The PCR technology currently used for nucleic acid detection is time-consuming, expensive, and cannot detect protein molecules, while the convenient and fast RAT test can only provide limited sensitivity. Our platform combines their advantages to achieve rapid and accurate detection of protein and nucleic acid molecules.

Innovation
  • Patent protected plasmonic nanostructures for achieving extremely high signal amplification to provide sub-femto molar detection limit
  • Functionalized surface for high sensing specificity
  • The user only needs to inject the sample to be tested, and then the machine can automatically detect
Key impact
  • Compact size, fast, user-friendly, and cost-effective
  • Multiplexing for different viruses, proteins, and chemicals
  • Within 10 min detection time
Award
  • Gold Medal at 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2024
Application
  • Diagnosis of epidemic diseases, such as influenza
  • Preventive screening and early diagnosis of diseases, such as early screening for Alzheimer's disease
  • Follow-up health monitoring
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)

Founded in 1963, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a forward-looking comprehensive research university with a global vision and a mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West. CUHK teachers and students hail from all around the world. Four Nobel laureates are associated with the university, and it is the only tertiary institution in Hong Kong with recipients of the Nobel Prize, Turing Award, Fields Medal and Veblen Prize sitting as faculty in residence. CUHK graduates are connected worldwide through an extensive alumni network. CUHK undertakes a wide range of research programmes in many subject areas, and strives to provide scope for all academic staff to undertake consultancy and collaborative projects with industry.
