All-electric Intelligent Anti-lock Braking System

Overview

Without any hydraulics, the All-electric Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is operated only by electric power, in which the electromagnetic actuators generate the electromagnetic braking torque. The smart ABS method maximises the tire-road adhesion coefficient via detecting the angular wheel acceleration, prevents wheels from locking, and minimises the braking distance.

Problem addressed

A solution to the drawbacks of hydraulic ABS, this All-electric Intelligent ABS does not require any hydraulic components, reducing the complexity and quantity of components. It also overcomes the problem of flammable brake fluid and causes no pedal vibration in ABS operation, achieving safer ABS operation and higher ABS performance, and at the same time, resulting no pollution.

Innovation
  • This ABS is operated only by electric power and mainly includes the electromechanical brakes (EMB), the electric control unit of EMB, the smart ABS algorithm and the electric control unit of ABS.
  • The electromechanical brake is the key component of the system. The electromagnetic actuator, operated by electric power, generates electromagnetic force, which is transferred to the braking wedges linking the braking pads via the mechanical force converter, resulting in braking torque.
Key impact
  • Faster dynamic response and more accurate control of braking torque, achieving safer operation and higher ABS performance, and at the same time, resulting no pollution.
  • Reduces complexity and quantity of components, and has individually controllable braking module.
  • Easy to be applied to other vehicle assistance systems without additional mechanical or hydraulic components.
Award
  • Silver Medal in the 2021 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions.
Application
  • Electric vehicles
  • Internal combustion engine vehicles
