This project has achieved passive radiative cooling function by using selected metal oxide particles and their particle-void structure, which are integrated into PET fibres.
While polyethylene (PE) can support passive cooling, its weakness, flammability and lack of durability make it unsuitable for everyday textiles. Polyester (PET), by contrast, is strong and widely used in garments but does not naturally possess the optical properties required for passive cooling.
Established in 2006, The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) is funded by the Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR government, and hosted by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
