Acoustic Metamaterials

HKUST has developed a family of effective noise remediation solutions based on the pioneering acoustic metamaterials technology. Soundproofing for noise with wide spectrum can be realized with this breakthrough technology especially in the low frequency range where applications of conventional soundproofing materials are either inadequate or otherwise extremely expensive.

Problem addressed

The acoustic metamaterials provide a means to absorb low frequency range noise in a cost effective way. It is compact and light weighted to fit into wide range of application scenario.

  • The acoustic metamaterials demonstrate excellent performance in low-frequency noise absorption with low production cost
  • The acoustic metamaterial is compact, light-weighted and simple in structure, which is ideal for many engineering design scenarios.
  • The acoustic metamaterial enables tunable spectrum, which can be precisely adapted to different noise design demand and user requirement.
Key impact
  • Enable a more pleasant environment by absorbing unwanted noise from different kinds of noise sources.
  • Provides cost-effective solutions to noise pollution in wide range of application scenarios.
  • Noise absoption in buildings and infrastructures
  • Noise absoption in transportation such as vehicles and aircraft
  • Noise absoption in sound effect specific premises such as theatre, recording studios, etc
