Anti-reflective, scratch-resistant coating for glasses and plastics

Overview

The present invention relates to an anti-reflective (AR) layer that is aimed to match the refractive index of the underlying substrate e.g. glass, chemically strengthened glass, plastics, etc., so as to maximize light transmission through it while providing scratch resistance.

Problem addressed

Anti-reflection (AR) layer is commonly used in reducing optical loss or reflection in glass or transparent plastic to improve light collection or brighten display screen. However, the AR layer is susceptible to scratch. This invention provides an AR layer which has both the optical properties of a common AR layer and has a scratch-proof sapphire outer thin-film coating.

Innovation
  • This invention provides a multi-layered structure and methods to deposit this innovative structure onto different substrates like glasses and plastics, making the substrates anti-reflective and scratch-resistant.
Key impact
  • This anti-reflective coating is ultra-hard, its hardness value is greater than those of commercially available cover glasses and chemically strengthened glasses.
Application
  • Coating on different glasses, like camera lens, glass screen of electronic devices, etc.
