Problem addressed

An electricity cable needs to be identified as de-energized before any works can be carried out, the only way to identify the energization status is to invasively piercing into the conductor. On the other hand, there are no easy ways to measure the current flowing in an electricity cable with multiple phase conductors, or in a DC circuit.

Innovation
  • The current invention measures the magnetic field around the cable and then work reversely to find out the current information (magnitude, phase and frequency) of each conductor inside the cable.
Key impact
  • Monitor the energization status (voltage) and operation state (current) in a non-invasive way
    • It can be used to non-invasively monitoring the operation conditions of the power delivery network, and check whether an electricity cable is energized before carrying out maintenance work.
  • Works with both AC and DC power
    • Conventional methods for current measurement works only for AC but not DC. This invention can be used for both AC and DC power.
  • Works with multiple conductors/phases inside a cable bundle
    • Conventional methods requires measuring individual wire inside the cable. This invention can be used to measure the current directly in a multi-phase cable bundle without breaking the outer insulation.
Application
  • Testing / Monitoring Devices
