High Pressure Extraction System

Overview

This high pressure extraction process enables the extraction of bioactive compounds with high yield, from a range of health food, including the Chinese medicinal Ganoderma lucidum spores breaking. This novel methodology enhances the extraction rate of bioactive compound by up to 200% compared to solvent extraction, and achieves Ganoderma lucidum spores breaking rate of up to 95%.

Problem addressed

Conventional extraction methods are typically operated at high cost with low extraction yield, long processing time and low extraction purity. These extraction methods also bring adverse impact to the environment, such as producing large amount of chemical solvent. The health supplement industry has an increasing demand for a more effective extraction method to tackle the above issues.

Innovation
  • Reduction of chemical solvent by using mechanical method for extraction.
  • Extending use of high pressure from other usage, such as sterilisation, to bioactive compound extraction.
Key impact
  • Compared with the traditional extraction method, the extraction time can be effectively reduced by about 95%, and the extraction rate can be increased to 200%.
  • As the required energy consumption and chemical solvents are lowered, the corresponding waste disposal costs can be reduced, thus the entire extraction cost can be decreased by at least 50%.
  • Reduce the consumption of energy and chemicals as well as the adverse impact on environment.
  • As the cost of extraction and production of health food decreases, it is expected that more consumers will be able to afford health products and improve their quality of life.
Award
  • 2022 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions - Bronze
Application
  • It can extract the bioactive compound from functional food and improve the extraction rate of saponins in Ginseng.
  • It can achieve a higher rate of wall-breaking of the Ganoderma lucidum spores and release more active ingredients.
  • It can be used in the extraction process of ready-to-drink herbal tea or traditional Chinese medicine beverages to maximise productivity.
