Problem addressed

Common protection materials are usually either relatively rigid to sustain intense impact with a lack of flexibility, or soft but bulky. Some proprietary products are expensive which limit the distribution channel. NAMI’s SPM is slim and flexible, yet effective in energy absorption and impact protection.

Innovation
  • NAMI’s SPM is endowed with impact protection and anti-stabbing properties by leveraging NAMI's experience in metal oxide and polymer composite material.
  • Adopting unique formulation and process, NAMI's SPM is slim, flexible and cost effective.
Key impact
  • Non-Newtonian, self-reinforced upon impact
  • Good impact protection performance and user experience
  • Wide choices of base materials, compatible with silicone and thermoplastics
  • Complies with international impact protection standards
Award
  • Gold Medal at the “2018 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions”
  • Silver Medal at the “2019 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions”
  • Silver Medal at the “2021 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions”
  • Silver Medal at the “2022 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions”
Application
  • Protection of fragile goods including bottles, electronics, etc.
  • Sports, occupational or elderly protection
Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI)

Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) is founded in 2000 by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. As Hong Kong’s largest government-funded research and development centre, ASTRI is a key force and super connector driving innovation and technology advancement in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, and the global innovation ecosystem. This role is strengthened through its merger with Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI).

Committed to bringing high impact research from lab to market, ASTRI advances interdisciplinary, market driven R&D that delivers practical innovations for industry and meaningful benefits for society.
