Anti-leakage surgical kit with noval therapeutic high GAG biomaterial

HKU
Overview

It is estimated that 60%-80% of a population have low back pain. At least 40% of subject with chronic back pain is due to intervertebral disc degeneration. New treatment of degenerated intervertebral discs points to regenerative medicine strategies which uses cells, bioactive biomaterials to reconstruct the intervertebral disc. Our new design to ensure the biomaterials will be delivered securely.

Problem addressed

The present medical treatment of degenerated intervertebral discs is too invasive and destructive. No good means to restore the biological characteristics and function of the intervertebral disc.

Innovation
  • A new surgical tool to introduce a biomaterial plug to the opening of annulus fibrosis created during surgery. The plug prevents leakage of the injected substances in the nucleus pulposus. The plug is composed of a specially formulated biomaterial.
  • The filling contains high GAG content biomaterial for IVD. The high GAG biomaterial is specially made using innovative production process.
Key impact
  • Proivde a effective surgical tool to inject a noval therapeutic high GAG biomaterial without the concern of leakage
Application
  • Surgical treatment of Intervertebral disc degeneration
  • Surgical procedures required to fill in cavities with therapeutic biomaterials
