Advanced Catalytic Material for Air Purification

HKUST
Overview

HKUST developed a supported metal catalyst with nanostructures that can purify air by removing contaminants containing toxic organic, inorganic, and/or biological species in the absence of UV illumination at ambient temperature. The catalytic material is stable and remains active for an extended period of time without the need of regeneration.

Problem addressed

To carry out air-purification without UV excitation and maintain high catalytic activity even at low temperature. The technology is eco-friendly and efficient in removing wide range of air pollutants.

Innovation
  • The catalytic material can purify air without UV illumination at ambient temperature.
  • The metal catalyst can be fabricated with high metal dispersion, which prevents sintering phenomenon.
  • Regeneration process is simple and does not require special equipment, it can simply be achieved by simple washing and drying in an oven.
Key impact
  • No UV excitation is required
  • High catalytic activity even at low temperature
  • Efficiency in removing wide range of air pollutants
  • Easy maintenance
Application
  • Disinfection devices
  • Air-exhaust treatment
  • Air purifying system
  • Air-conditioning and dehumidifier system
