Problem addressed

Parkinson’s symptoms, such as muscle tremors, slowness of movement and rigidity, are caused by the progressive destruction of brain cells that produce dopamine. Previous work has suggested that an abundance of a protein called α-Syn may be to blame. The compound of this technology could be used to remove α-Syn and thus treat Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Innovation
  • The current technology presents a possible solution to Parkinson’s symptoms by enhancing autophagy by promoting the degradation of α-Syn.
  • The present technology, being a synthetic compound based from a natural herb Gou teng, it has been used by Chinese doctors for over 2000 years to treat “the shakes” – now known as Parkinson’s disease (PD).
Key impact
  • The present technology suggested a potential treatment for Parkinson’s disease (PD).
  • As a synthetic analogue of the active natural compound Cory B, the present technology presents a pure and more potent form of its natural active ingredient found in Gou teng. Thus, this can be easily manufactured at scale and produced as medical grade or food grade compounds.
Application
  • The current technology can be developed as bioactive supplements to alleviate the conditions of Parkinson’s disease (PD).
  • This also can be further developed into a drug candidate for PD.
