Biofeedback System with Body Mapping Clothing for Patients with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

Overview

PolyU has developed a smart clothing embedded with sensors, and used in conjunction with biofeedback system, to assess the posture and spinal muscle activity of patients with back pain or spinal deformity. The system becomes an AI physiotherapist that patients can bring home and conduct posture training without frequently visiting clinics. This technology has been commercialised through PolyU academic-led start-up Active Biotechnology (Hong Kong) Company Limited.

Problem addressed

We developed a posture training system for medical and healthcare applications to address the unmet needs of adolescents with mild scoliosis and provide alternative options for those undergoing brace treatment without reducing their quality of life. The application of this technology can also be extended to posture training for non-scoliotic subjects to alleviate back pain.

Innovation
  • Surface electromyography sensors and inertial measurement units can assess the spinal muscle activity and balance, and sitting posture of the patient, respectively. The strength and balance of spinal muscles and the sitting posture of the patient during training can be clearly monitored.
  • We developed a machine learning algorithm based on sensor data corrected against professional physiotherapists to provide AI-assisted posture training assessment for our system.
Key impact
  • A clear picture of the muscle activity and posture can help the patient and physician to understand the source of back pain and therefore devise and undergo specific non-invasive treatment and muscle training to alleviate the condition.
  • Patients no longer have to frequent visits clinics and can undergo posture training at home.
Award
  • Special Award for the Invention from Romanian Association for Nonconventional Technologies
  • Gold Medal at The 45th international exhibition of inventions, Geneva Switzerland
  • Innovation Award at the 17th World Summit of Chinese Entrepreneurs
Application
  • Patients with back pain and spinal deformity
