Extracting Autologous Neural Stem Cells for Treatment of Neurodegenerative Diseases

Overview

In stem cell therapy, stem cells can be transferred from a donor to the patient, and be used to regenerate healthy functional cells and replace the damaged cells. This technology introduced a new method for extracting neural stem cells directly from the brain, the collected stem cells can be used for further culture, stem cell therapy or clinical research.

Problem addressed

Extracting the undifferentiated stem cells directly from the body would have fewer concerns. However, research in neural stem cells (NSCs) and regenerative medicine based on NSCs transplantation were hindered due to risks and difficulties in isolating NSCs from the brain. This technology could help to harvest NSCs from the patient’s brain safely.

Innovation
  • NSCs can be safely extracted using innovative, specific magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) covered with antibodies when a magnetic field is applied.
Key impact
  • This technology provides a safe and efficient means to extract NSCs from the brain directly.
  • It’s believed that NSCs extracted by this technology can more effectively differentiate into healthy brain tissues when compared with the other artificially generated stem cells.
  • By using patient’s own stem cells with the same origin, it reduces the risk of complications and immune rejection.
Award
  • Gold Medal in Surgery Category and Diploma of High Scientific and Technological Level of Invention of the 44th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva
Application
  • Stem cells extraction, especially for extracting neural stem cells from the brain
