Low cost catheters for PCI-surgery

ABIC
Overview

This invention develops a type of new catheter by using advanced nano-printing technique for PCI-surgery to improve the imaging range and resolution. The design has been verified by three rounds of animal studies, including coronary in pig with stent implanted and rabbit aorta with plaque. Experimental results prove the great potential of this new design in PCI srugery.

  • Low cost catheters for PCI-surgery
Commercialisation opportunities
Co-development, technology licensing
Problem addressed

Current catheters for PCI surgery major focuse on coronary with performance optimized for similar lumen size. However, imaging demandings for smaller lumen like neurovascular and even larger lumen like esophagus require an novel design with balanced performance regards to imaging range, resolution, and cost.

Innovation
  • The new design adopt advanced nano printing technique. The beam profile can be easily reshaped to target format by modifiing the phase pattern, and no need to change the work flow and without change the facilites.
  • Our product provides a flexible solution for the imaging scenarios covering neurovascular, coronary and even esophagus.
  • Compatible to existing commerical imaging system
Key impact
  • This design provides a new solution for intravascular imaging with variable lumen size with balanced imaging performance
Application
  • Directly apply to commercial coronary OCT system
  • PCI surgery

Advanced Biomedical Instrumentation Centre

Biomedical instrumentation plays a critical and increasing role, albeit invisible to most people, in the healthcare industry by enabling more accurate diagnoses, effective treatments, and earlier intervention and prevention capabilities. Advancing the development of cutting-edge medical devices, actuators and sensors requires collaboration among talented scientists, engineers and clinicians, as well as an environment that facilitates the commercialisation of research results into real-world applications that are accessible to a broader population.

The mission of the Advanced Biomedical Instrumentation Centre is to accelerate progress in translating advanced biomedical instrumentation from research and development into real-world healthcare solutions that benefit people in Hong Kong and around the world. The Centre aims to foster collaboration among top-notch engineers, scientists and clinicians in the US and Hong Kong to develop next-generation microfluidics and low-cost instrumentation technologies. It also takes advantage of Hong Kong’ s vibrant start-up community to commercialise the research work tailored for Asian patients.
