Ultrafast 2D Scanning with Spatio-temporally Incremental Fiber Swept Source (STIFSS)

HKU
Overview

The invention integrates 2D information into an optical source so that a 2D image can be taken by a single shot of laser via a bundle of fiber

  • Ultrafast 2D Scanning with Spatio-temporally Incremental Fiber Swept Source (STIFSS) 0
  • Ultrafast 2D Scanning with Spatio-temporally Incremental Fiber Swept Source (STIFSS) 1

Problem addressed

Traditional swept source for flow cytometers using wavelength sweeping can only provide peak power up to mW level and framerate at kHz level. These traditional optical sources do not contain spatial information, it requires the help of mechanical or electronic scanning units to perform 2D imaging which limited the scanning speed.

Key impact
  • High resolution, 2D intertia-free scanning at 10's MHz, High power, 2D spatially-swept source can provide up to kW level
  • Ultrafast scanning, a 2D image can be captured within <100 ns
  • Scalable through changing the repetition rate of the laser seed source
  • Very low cost (US $200) compared to commercially available active-controlled ultrafast scanning device (US $20,000)
Application
  • Ultrafast flowcytometry - high speed laser scanning for surface inspection, for example, scanning of glass for portable and smart device
  • With this technology, laser scanning application like flowcytometry and surface inspection can take records at multiple points at a single shot scanning which can speed up the whole process and improve the throughput.
