Problem addressed

Leveraging infrastructure, VI-Map seamlessly integrates roadside sensor perception with vehicle perception to automatically construct HD maps in real time, significantly reducing mapping costs while ensuring timely and accurate map updates.

Innovation
  • Utilizing density, direction, height, and intensity features extracted from LiDAR point clouds, the infrastructure can efficiently construct a local HD map.
  • Using vehicle trajectories and lane instance segmentation, VI-Map constructs the road's driving topology within the map.
  • Propose a three-stage mapping algorithm to fuse two vectorized HD maps from vastly different perspectives.
Key impact
  • This technology can greatly improve the accuracy and scope of autonomous driving mapping and improve the efficiency and safety of autonomous driving.
  • This technology can effectively overcome complex environmental disturbances, such as severe weather and blocked areas, broaden the feasible range of autonomous driving, and improve its adaptability and reliability in various scenarios.
Award
  • MobiCom 2023 Best Community Contribution Award
  • Gold Prize at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva
Application
  • Improve the safety of autonomous driving
  • Enhance autonomous driving efficiency
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)

Founded in 1963, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a forward-looking comprehensive research university with a global vision and a mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West. CUHK teachers and students hail from all around the world. Four Nobel laureates are associated with the university, and it is the only tertiary institution in Hong Kong with recipients of the Nobel Prize, Turing Award, Fields Medal and Veblen Prize sitting as faculty in residence. CUHK graduates are connected worldwide through an extensive alumni network. CUHK undertakes a wide range of research programmes in many subject areas, and strives to provide scope for all academic staff to undertake consultancy and collaborative projects with industry.
