Electrochemically-Cycled Oxidation ECO®for Landfill Leachate Treatment

HKUST
Overview

By 2050, one billion metric tons of waste will be landfilled globally and over 30% will become toxic wastewater – landfill leachate. While ~50% of landfill leachate worldwide are co-treated into municipal sewage lines, this approach has posed great environmental challenges. ECO® can reduces leachate prior to sewage cotreatment through its novel two-step electrochemical treatment compaction process, presenting huge market opportunity in both existing and future landfill globally.

Problem addressed

ECO® can reduces leachate prior to sewage cotreatment through its novel two-step electrochemical treatment compaction process. Not only can this lowers the downstream environmental and health risks, but also greatly reduce the overall wastewater treatment cost.

Innovation
  • Strong toxicity and absorbance reduction via its novel two-step electrochemical process
  • Recycles the oxidant (chlorine) for the next leachate batch, cutting time and energy consumption by 4-5 times
  • No chemical dosing and Low maintenance
Key impact
  • Reduces the leachate exposure as well as carbon footprint in the sewage cotreatment process
  • Lowers environmental and health risks from discharged leachate from landfills
  • Increases operative life of UV disinfection lamps
  • Minimizes downstream wastewater treatment cost
Application
  • ECO® can be installed in the sewage cotreatment process globally. Sewage co-treatment is adopted in half of the world that is adopting sewage cotreatment, such as in many parts of North America and Europe.
