Multispectral Acoustic Sensor for On-Site Plastic Sorting

Overview

This system is an acoustic sensor for on-site plastic waste presorting. The sorting mechanism is based on the acoustic impedance difference and multispectral acoustic sensing. The sensor can be installed on waste collection devices and help sort plastic wastes collected from waters on-site.

Problem addressed

Currently, the quantity of plastic wastes entering the oceans through rivers annually is very large. Thus, a number of companies are devoted to collecting the plastic wastes from water and recycle. However, the recycled plastic processing companies and specialized recycled plastic marketplaces is currently using manual pre-sorting, which is slow and inaccurate.

Innovation
  • Plastic sorting based on acoustic sensing
  • Underwater acoustic sensing for material identification
  • Multireflectional and multispectral immersion acoustic sensing
Key impact
  • Floating waste pre-sorting on-site to increase the rate of reclying
  • Corresponding acoustic sensing technique extendable to nondestructive testing of underwater facility
Application
