All-weather Thermochromic Windows for Synchronous Solar and Thermal Radiation Regulation

HKUST
Overview

Adaptive control of solar and thermal radiation through windows is of pivotal importance for building energy saving. HKUST has developed a solar and thermal regulatory (STR) window that can passively tune both the solar transmittance and thermal radiation emittance according to the ambient temperature, resulting in mass energy saving.

Technical name of innovation
A thermochromic structure for solar and thermal radiation regulation
Commercialisation opportunities
technology licensing
Problem addressed

Thermochromic windows for buildings or vehicles to reduce energy consumption

Innovation
  • Coupling between hydrogel and silver nanowires is used to control the behavior of water molecular in different temperature, thereby realizing high dual solar and thermal radiation modulation.
Key impact
  • The optical performance is stable after 500 heating-cooling cycles
  • Enables indoor temperature warmer in winter, while cooler in summer without HVAC system
  • Superior energy savings compared with other windows with HVAC system and different climates
Application
  • Thermochromic windows for buildings or vehicles
  • Energy saving of HVAC systems
  • Window suppliers or real estate companies
